Inktober 2018 part 2

The Ocean Edition: It’s a wrap!

I made it to the end & managed to keep top my goals, allowing for both some growth & some refinement along the way.

Je suis parvenu à la fin et j’ai réussi à ne pas dépasser mes objectifs, ce qui a permis à la fois de la croissance et du raffinement.

One area I felt the need to stretch out a bit was more colour when the subject required it.

Un domaine dans lequel j’ai ressenti le besoin de s’étendre un peu était la couleur lorsque le sujet le demandait.

Inktober part 4

Inktober part 4, the final round for 2016.

Well I’m glad I made it to the end of Inktober, my latest online artistic challenge. But also glad that I restricted myself to 3 inch square drawings so as to not overwhelm myself. In reflection I think that I would do it & other similar challenges again.

(If you missed my previous Inktober posts you can click for part 1, part 2 & part 3.)

Those of you who are just  joining in here is a link to a video created by Jake Parker, the artist who began Inktober in 2009.

Inktober relax
Inktober relax

I have been keeping with the theme of small Post-It note sized drawings this week so that I can relax sand not stress over the challenge.

Inktober wet

In retrospect this wet & dismal time of year is perfect to spend time indoors on a creative pursuit such as this.

I still manage to find time during a weekday escape to do a couple of this week’s sketches.

My first inclination for flight was a plane but I stretched myself too think a little outside the box.

I’ll just squeeze in one more sketch before the credits roll 🙂

If you’re feeling a little lost about what I’m talking about, this challenge was begun by Jake Parker.

Or you can also refer to my previous post.

Inktober rock

After the first week I realized that if I was going to try to do 31 ink sketches, I would need to limit myself in size & detail. So I chose a 3″ square post it note as my template.

Inktober broken

So far this challenge had not broken me! I’ve done 15 out of 31, with a couple bonus sketches that I have done while out with the Victoria Urban Sketchers.

Off I get to the end successfully I think I may try to take on some other sketch challenges such as Every Day in May. There are of course many more such challenges with varied themes or prompt lists.

Inktober part 1

It’s Inktober!

Inktober hungry
Inktober hungry

And one thing that I like to do when I have the luxury of time is to participate in online art challenges that I discovered through friends or online connections.

You can click for part 2part 3 & part 4..

Inktober
Inktober

One of these initiatives is Inktober which was begun by Jake Parker in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills. The idea being that you draw one picture every day for the entire month of October, resulting in 31 ink pictures by the end of the month.

Inktober noisy man

He guides us as follows :

Inktober rules:

1) Make a drawing in ink (you can do a pencil under-drawing if you want).

2) Post it online

3) Hashtag it with #inktober and #inktober2016

4) Repeat

Note: you can do it daily, or go the half-marathon route and post every other day, or just do the 5K and post once a week. What ever you decide, just be consistent with it. INKtober is about growing and improving and forming positive habits, so the more you’re consistent the better.

He even provides a list of prompts for each year if you are lacking in inspiration.

This has also been reminding me of Danny Gregory‘s book Every Day Matters, in that it reminds us to look around and see the beauty and art potential in the objects that surround us. Like pocket change, if you look closely at the details there are history lessons, iconic animals and a little pocket lint 😉

As I have mentioned before, I am one of the  co-coordinators the Victoria Urban Sketchers group. We meet bi-weekly around town to sketch together from what we see in our surroundings, not from photographs. Here a couple samples:
